They are tights and I think they are about as "convertible" as any other pair of tights that you can cut with scissors. However, I must say that I have given these a 3-star rating only because these are my favorite maternity/post partum tights of all time. I am still trying to lose a bunch of my "baby" weight and I love the fact that they tights are not tight fitting at all for me. I am tall (5'10) and that combined with a lot of weight gain made it extremely difficult to find tights that I could wear near the end of my pregnancy. I am so sad that I did not find these until after I had the baby. However, since I still have quite a lot of my "baby" weight to lose, these tights are still perfect for me. They are very stretchy which is great because I still don't like to wear things that bind my abdomen too tightly but they are not too lose to wear at the moment. In fact, I think they will still fit when I have lost another 20 lbs (they are that stretchy). They are also not wooly in feeling which is good because wooly tights usually make my legs itch. All in all, I really like the material and the fit of these tights. I originally purchased only one pair but I am going to purchase several more today to tide me over until I can fit into my prepregnancy tights.
